The J-school Career “Scare”

30 Mar

Some videos documenting the Career Fair yesterday … which was somewhat odd.

I woke up on Saturday morning at 6am after a very rough week (handing in the Master’s Project, interview with the BBC) and not so many hours of sleep, and recorded me thoughts:

Gaia shares her thoughts before the start of the fair:

It was a long and exhausting day – I met with 15 people – and most of us were trying to shake off our nerves and fear of unemployment by being ridiculous (ok right, it might have been just me). I pestered people by asking them silly questions:

Alison, Owen and Maile play along:

Smriti and Julia are wonderful, Ryan and Mat, well, not so much:

And then eight hours of attempting to sell ourselves (in order to survive!!), we did the only thing we knew how to do on half-dead brains and misfiring neurons: we went to the Lion’s Head to drink.

Amin, his cardigan and Laura talk about the Fair:

One person twittered: “This is not a Career Expo, it’s an unpaid internship expo!” It’s true that several recruiters did not have jobs available and were looking for unpaid interns or freelancers, and some were just downright vague. But it was nice to find out what people are looking for and to get the business cards of all the recruiters. I’m not very positive that yesterday’s event will result in jobs for more than a handful of J-schoolers … or am I being too pessimistic? View some of the videos to see what J-schoolers thought:

Afsin, Luis, Nikolaj, Owen and Mariana have their say:

And that was the day! Two momentous projects lie behind us now – the Career Fair and the Master’s Project – and in eight weeks (really?) we will be graduating! It has been the fastest ten months of my life and I have been left somewhat bewildered, a little confused and apparently “educated.” We’ll see about that …

From next week I will be doing one day a week at the BBC (offices by Madison Square Garden) and I can’t wait for the opportunity – it’s amazing! I’m also really excited (like a kid!) about going to Washington D.C. next weekend, I have no doubt that it’s going to be a nice road trip and fantastic break from the city.
Love and miss you all!
